We have all seen this image at some point - it has been used to highlight the difference between giving everyone the same and giving each one what they need.
Many words are thrown around in this context: equality, equity, fairness... Name them as you will, the fact is that it is very easy to recognise how the British education system does exactly what the left panel depicts - under the cloak of "adapting to learners" it checks where each pupil stands with respect to their learning needs and then gives every one of them the same box to stand on, under the name of "attainment".
Long forgotten is the necessary second part of "adapting to learners": once it is established that different children start from different levels - the point of education is to give them all the same opportunities to reach the same destination, not those disgraceful targets with which teachers play God and condemn children to remain in their social class by limiting their future.
